A Prayer for Renewal
In Psalm 51:7-13, David continues his prayer of repentance after his sin with Bathsheba. He asks God to purify him, using the imagery of being cleansed with hyssop, a plant used for ceremonial purification. David acknowledges that only God can truly wash away his sins and restore his inner purity. He pleads for a clean heart and a renewed spirit, asking God not to cast him away or take His Holy Spirit from him, recognizing the importance of God’s presence in his life. He also prays for joy and gladness to be restored, seeking reconciliation with God. It’s a heartfelt plea for renewal, for cleansing from sin, restoration of a right relationship with God, and a commitment to help others turn to Him as well.
A Prayer for God’s Presence P2
We begin a new series today examining great prayers of the Bible. Exodus 33:12-23 finds Moses conversing with God as he expresses a desire for God’s presence to remain with the Israelites as they journey to the Promised Land. Moses asks God to show him His ways so that he can know God more intimately and lead the people effectively. God responds by assuring Moses of His presence and grace, but Moses presses further, boldly asking God to show him His glory. God agrees to reveal His goodness, but says that no one can see His full glory and live. Instead, God allows Moses to see His back, protecting him in the process. It’s a moment of profound relationship between Moses and God, showing both God’s greatness and His willingness to draw near to His servant. God’s presence is where true peace, joy and security is found – let Moses’ prayer be ours as well!
The Peacemakers and the Persecuted P2
Jesus is the ultimate peacemaker – the “Prince of Peace.” Through His death and resurrection, He reconciled sinful humanity to God, bringing peace between us and our Creator. As believers strive to become more like Christ, it naturally follows that we, too, are called to be peacemakers. Today’s message reminds us that while Christ came to bring peace, He endured great persecution in the process. Similarly, as Christians, we should expect to face persecution as we stand firm in our faith and remain obedient to His word. Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 3:12, “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” In this final Beatitude, take comfort in knowing that when we are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, God’s blessings will follow!
