Why Partiality is a Problem
What does it mean to be ‘partial’? Today, in James 1:1-13, inspired by the Holy Spirit, James focuses on the sin of partiality in the Church—the sin of favouritism and discrimination. To be ‘partial’ towards some means to judge others as lesser than you based on appearances, going completely against the love of Christ. We are called to love our neighbours – not to judge them! Jesus came to break down walls of hostility with His gospel that is available to all. When we are partial, we miss the heart of God. When we are partial, we aren’t humbling ourselves before His glory. It is imperative that believers show mercy and love because they have been shown supreme mercy and love from the Father. We cannot be genuine Christ followers and walk in patterns of hatred and discrimination. How can we better love our neighbours today?
Be Doers of the Word P2
You may be able to talk the talk, but can you walk the walk? There is a reason people say that actions speak louder than words, and James would agree. In James 1:22-27, James shows his zealous heart for real fruit in genuine Christ followers. He calls us to be DOERS of the Word, not just HEARERS. The truth is, it can be easy to hear and do nothing. Some of us have done that for years – hearing sermons without letting them change our actions. James insists we have an outward demonstration of our inward faith, and if we don’t, we need to look in the biblical mirror. If our faith has no feet, then It is time for us to consider what it is we actually believe. Today’s message is about obedience, which stems from a love for our Saviour and not from ‘earning’ worth. Hearing, alone, does not make a Christ Follower – practical steps of obedience are the difference between life and death.

Again, James challenges us as believers to put feet to our faith and prove its authenticity through how we live. We aren’t saved to be dormant, we are saved to produce fruit! Character is a great indication of the fruit in our lives. Our character is best seen through how we listen, how we speak and how we address our anger. With clarity, James teaches we must be slow to speak and quick to hear – how often do we live like this command is reversed? We must TRASH our sin, and put on the Word of God. But if we want to do that, what anger needs to stop? What words need to stop? And what listening needs to start?
